Psycho-oncology has grown exponentially over the last years, with a mandatory indication for multidisciplinary intervention and inclusion of psycho-oncology programs within many national cancer plan acts. The need for psychosocial training of all healthcare professionals working in oncology is now considered essential for good quality of cancer care. Psychopharmacology has a central specific role both because of the efficacy of psychotropic drugs in the treatment of psychiatric disorders secondary to cancer and because of the new data derived by psychopharmacological research in psychiatry that, when applied in oncology and palliative care, may be of extreme help in relieving cancer patients from their suffering. A manual or practical text on psychopharmacology in oncology has been lacking, and for this reason, the idea of this book originated with the intention to fill this gap, by giving clinicians practical indications and suggestions relative to the efficacy and safety of psychotropic drugs in the treatment of psychiatric disorders in cancer patients across the trajectory of disease. One of the main aims of the book is in fact to present the main issues involved in psychopharmacological management of psychiatric disorders in cancer and palliative care, according to the different possible psychiatric diagnoses, with special attention to have psychopharmacological intervention within a broad framework of an integrative psychosocial, patient-centered approach. A second aim is to illustrate the significant and challenging problems clinicians may encounter (e.g., drugs, pharmacological characteristics, side effects, drug–drug interaction, doses, and route of administration) including the emerging theme of adjuvant use of psychotropic drugs for the treatment of symptoms/syndromes not mainly related to psychiatric disorders (e.g., pain, hot-flashes, fatigue). A third aim is to examine the needs of special populations, including children and adolescents, as well as the elderly, affected by cancer, when psychopharmacology treatment is indicated.
