Book Description
Twenty-two years ago, under the publications program of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), we produced the first edition of Neurosurgical Emergen-cies in two volumes. The topic had not been previously addressed in monograph form, and those two little blue volumes enjoyed gratifyingly broad acceptance and (mostly) favorable reviews; they were best sellers, at least by neurosurgical standards. After the first edition was pub-lished, I had the privilege of chairing the AANS Publications Committee and steering it through some difficult finan-cial times, during which we successfully negotiated a new publications partnership agreement with Thieme Medical Publishers. My thanks, as always, to president of Thieme Brian Scanlan for helping us through those uncertain times which are now well behind us. One of the major products for the new Thieme part-nership was a second, updated edition of Neurosurgical Emergencies. It took us some time to complete the effort, punctuated primarily by my change of venue from chair-man at the University of Oklahoma to chairman at Temple University in Philadelphia. We hearkened to the critiques of the first edition, considered the previous manuscripts carefully, and -revised, replaced, and expanded as we thought best, to bring forth a truly modern and updated volume. It was then, as now, the editor’s and the publisher’s
sincere hope that current and future generations of readers would find the product useful and worth the effort. Again the book, published as a single volume in large folio, was enthusiastically received, and I was pleased to see that the second edition was translated into Chinese as well. Last year Thieme approached me to produce a third edition, which you have in front of you. The Thieme team responsible for this edition is new, Timothy Hiscock and Sarah Landis, equally as effective and professional as their predecessors, and the book is substantively new as well. I worked carefully to keep chapters that were of value, refresh those that needed updating, and weave in new material and new ideas. As is always true with an edited text, the organizational framework and overall design are my own, but the true knowledge base is the sum of the individual chapter authors’ contributions, and great thanks are due them for their excellent contributions. All of them are friends and esteemed colleagues. We stand ready, as always, to produce a fourth edition if and when the time seems right, but for now, I offer this one as the most current and comprehensive treatment of Neurosurgical Emergencies that we could assemble.
