Fundamentals of Oral Histology and Physiology PDF Free Download
Fundamentals of Oral Histology and Physiology is a textbook for dental students. The aim of the book is to integrate oral histology and physiology, presenting the concepts of these disciplines that are relevant to clinical dentistry in a thorough but concise manner. Most dental students studying oral histology and physiology will already have or are currently obtaining a background in the basic medical sciences, including cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, general histology and physiology and immunology. Thus this text focuses on the histology and physiology that students need to know to practice dentistry and to understand and evaluate the current literature, without repeating the basic information that they learn in other courses. The book is organized into five sections, each including two or three relevant chapters: Development, with chapters on the embryonic development of the head, face, and mouth and the development of the teeth; The Teeth, with chapters on enamel, and dentin, pulp, and tooth pain; Tooth and Jaw Support, with chapters on the periodontium, tooth eruption, and the temporomandibular joint; Mucosal Structure and Function, with chapters on the oral mucosa and mucosal sensation, and chemoreception and perception; and Oral Effectors, with chapters on salivary glands and saliva, orofacial pain, touch, thermosensation, and sensorimotor function, and speech production. Each chapter is organized in a logical, straightforward manner, with micrographs, drawings, charts, and tables designed to illustrate and augment the concepts presented in the text. Brief summaries at key points in the text highlight the important information and concepts presented in the preceding paragraphs, and each chapter has an extensive glossary. Clinical correlations for common diseases and conditions are included in each chapter, and many chapters include case studies, so that this book will be a useful future reference. The online version of the book also includes review questions and answers. We have assembled a diverse group of experts to contribute chapters. These include well-known research scientists (Martyn Cobourne and Paul Sharpe, Michel Goldberg, Barry Sessle, Bradley Formaker), experienced educators (Joseph Grasso), and superb clinicians (Ellen Eisenberg and Easwar Natarajan, Felipe Porto, Janet Rovalino). We are grateful to our contributors for their enthusiastic support for the book and their prompt responses to our numerous messages and questions. We also greatly appreciate the interest and support of our editors and the staff at Wiley-Blackwell.
